Living in Black Mountain, NC: 8 Reasons I Keep Coming Back

By Dylan Lennon September 21, 2024 3 min read

Black Mountain is one of my favorite places to escape to, even though I live just 20 minutes away in Asheville.

It’s got a small-town vibe that feels different from Asheville, but close enough for a quick getaway.

Here’s why Black Mountain has captured my attention and why I think it’s a great place to visit or call home.

1. Close-Knit Community

The friendly, welcoming atmosphere in Black Mountain makes it easy to strike up a conversation, especially at the Black Mountain Tailgate Market.

Every summer, the town hosts the Sourwood Festival, a celebration of local crafts, music, and food that gives you a real taste of the community spirit.

2. Outdoor Adventures

Catawba Falls is a must-see for nature lovers. This relatively easy hike takes you to a stunning multi-tiered waterfall, which is especially beautiful after a rainy spell.

For a quicker hike with rewarding views, Lookout Mountain in Montreat offers a fantastic vantage point of the town and surrounding mountains. It’s the perfect spot to get a feel for Black Mountain’s natural beauty.

3. Charming Downtown

Wandering through downtown Black Mountain, especially on Cherry Street, is always a delight. It’s filled with local shops, galleries, and cozy cafes.

I always stop by The Dripolator Coffeehouse for a cappuccino or grab a donut at Dough House, where the (vegan) donuts are made fresh to order and are impossible to resist.

4. Local Dining Gems

For a memorable meal, The Red Rocker Inn is a go-to spot for Southern comfort food in a historic setting.

If I’m craving pizza, Fresh Wood Fired Pizza is where I head. It’s a local favorite, with a laid-back atmosphere that makes it easy to relax and enjoy a slice or two.

5. Breweries & Local Eats

Pisgah Brewing is the perfect place to grab a cold craft beer and catch live music on a warm summer night. It’s a local institution with a laid-back vibe.

For something more low-key, Lookout Brewing offers a cozy spot with a strong sense of community. Both places feel like home for beer lovers and locals alike.

6. Diverse Real Estate Options

Black Mountain offers a range of homes, from charming historic bungalows to luxurious estates.

The High Rock Acres community, in particular, stands out for its stunning mountain-view homes.

It’s the kind of place that blends luxury with the privacy and peacefulness of mountain living, making it ideal for those who want to escape the hustle but still enjoy modern comforts.

7. Arts and Culture

For a small town, Black Mountain has a rich arts scene. The Black Mountain Center for the Arts offers local exhibitions, classes, and performances, bringing a creative pulse to the town.

White Horse Black Mountain is another gem, offering live music and events in a relaxed, intimate setting. It’s a great place to enjoy local talent and a mix of genres.

8. Proximity to Asheville

One of the best parts about living in Black Mountain is how close it is to Asheville. Just a 20-minute drive away, it’s easy to enjoy everything Asheville has to offer while still having the peaceful retreat of Black Mountain to return to.

Whether you’re looking for a weekend getaway or considering a permanent move, Black Mountain gives you the best of both worlds—close to the action but far enough away to enjoy some peace and quiet.

Why I Keep Coming Back

Black Mountain strikes the perfect balance between peaceful retreat and proximity to the vibrant city life of Asheville.

Whether it’s hiking to waterfalls, enjoying local eats, or catching live music, this small town has something for everyone.

Every time I visit, I find something new to love—and I’m sure you will too.
